Inter Global Greetings 2-3 Freshfield 2nd XI
19th September 2002

Freshfield Reserves' outing against the enigmatically named Inter Global Greetings produced their best performance of the season thus far. They were able to welcome back Graeme Davies, arguably the best centre back ever to wear a Freshfield shirt. He and Graeme Rooney together played a major part in breaking down many early Inter attacks the majority of which came down the right wing. They were, however, ably assisted by outstanding performances again from Paul "Lizard" Hayes and Mark Wynne who did a brilliant job in neutralising any danger.

Once Freshfield had settled they started to play some excellent football with some intricate passing and some good off the ball running. After about 20 minutes of Inter pressure Rooney played a neat ball out of defence over the top of the Inter back four, for Tony Lynch to run onto and volley home from 10 yards out. The goal was perhaps against the run of play but numerous earlier chances from him and strking partner Tommy Smith had always threatened this outcome. Soon after Mark Wynne made a brilliant run onto a fine Hayes pass and found himself in the box; he neatly angled the ball past the oncoming keeper. The ball was certainly goalbound but Lynch also running in stole the glory thinking there was a player behind him.

The second half again saw chances from either sides, substitutions of Steve Hughes, Martin Hirst and John Eccles strengthened the Freshfield side who tirelessly worked for the killer goal. However, with the dark drawing in, Inter who battled relentlessly scored with 10 minutes to go and gave themselves hope at 2-1. It wasn't until they scored again with a good move in the box that Freshfield saw the points drifting off into the moonlight. The up stepped super-sub John Eccles to pop up in the box after excellent work from Darren Jawook and Paul Hayes to smash home Freshfield's winner, much to the visitors' joy.

A great performance all round sets up a delicious away tie to Ainsdale Reserves this coming Sunday.
