Freshfield 4-0 Scarisbrick Hotel
6th October 2002

Freshfield finally played with the assurance and quality of passing that they have threatened all season and easily swept aside a team that have been in the First Division for many years. The game was effectively dead with 15 minutes gone when Martin Hirst's 25 -yard thunderbolt made the score 3-0. The game was anti-climatic after that, although it was pleasing to see that Freshfield's concentration held to ensure the first clean sheet of the season.

The weather was warm and sunny, exceptionally so for an October fixture, but Freshfield's early play left Scarisbrick completely cold. Minutes into the game a sweet pass from Damian Nolan found Tommy Smith one-on-one with the opposition 'keeper, and Smith made no mistake. Five minutes later Neil Makinson headed home a Brain McGlynn cross to make it 2-0. McGlynn was giving Scarisbrick a torrid time down the right flank as Freshfield's passing, crisp and decisive, left the opposition chasing the ball for most of the half. Hirst's goal completely deflated the away team, but although their tackling sometimes showed a little too much frustration, they kept at their task.

After the break both teams were subdued, but canny substitutions from Manager Andy Smith saw Freshfield inject some pace and life into the final quarter of the game. Geoff Booker scored with almost his first tocuh, driving home a sweet cross from Gramee Davies, happily reinastalled to the starting line-up.  Damian Nolan and Graeme Davies combined well at the the heart of the midfield, and Steve Hughes put in another commanding performance at centre-half. Davies should have made the score 5-0 but missed a tremendously easy chance at the end, but nonetheless this was a very encouraging performance.
